I posted this on my personal blog last year, but it’s something I still think about daily! How much is too much? Is a girl day at the salon ok?
Is it really possible that we’re turning our little girls into Divas? With the economy in the pot, are people really treating their kids to facials and massages?Newsweek says they are…http://www.newsweek.com/id/191247
Reading the article I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I’m completely in shock that a parent would let their 5 year old get a spray tan, but on the other hand I take my 2 year old to nail salon to get her “piggies” painted. I’ve watched the TLC reality series ”Toddlers & Tiaras,” and have been appalled by the price of the dress, the make up on the toddler, and everything they call Glam. As I type this I can look over at the growing pile of dress up fancy gown’s, tutu’s and toy shoes all sitting neatly in my daughters room. Does that make me a hypocrite? So where do we draw the line?
My daughter wants to do everything my husband and I do. If he’s playing with airplanes, she wants to play with airplanes. If I’m putting make-up on, she wants to put make-up on. So is it ok that I “pretend” to blush her cheeks? Is it ok to tell her she looks pretty when her hair is done? Is it ok to run around in homemade tutu’s? Is it ok to take her to the salon to get her “piggies” painted?
I don’t cut her hair myself , but we go to a children’s salon to “get her hair done“. We get our toes painted, we go shoes shopping, welunch, and we even goto Starbucks for a sit down coffee and chocolate milk. Part of me can’t wait until she’s old enough to have a Mommy/Daughter Spa Day. I do these things, not only because we both enjoy them, but in the hope that it’s creating a special bond between us. What about when she gets older? We all remember the first time we shaved our legs. I’m willing to bet that 90% of you did this without your Mothers knowledge and you probably did not get the results you had hoped for. I still have that stupid scar!! Not only do I want her to come to me because she want to shave, but I don’t want to turn her away. I don’t want her to end up with the same stupid scar! At what age is it ok to shave? Now a days we have laser hair removal. I’ve done, I love, and I’d recommend it to anyone, even my daughter. Of course when she’s old enough, but what age is that again? What age to I tell her about bikini line maintenance? Why am I even thinking about this? I have a 2 year old? ARGH!
There’s a fine line between a polished little girl and a Diva. How does a Mommy make sure not to cross that line? And to think, it’s only going to get harder!
