From the day I learned that we were having a girl I fantasized about her hair, what it would look like and how I would style it. I also swore I would not cut it before the age of two. Well, here we are at two and scissors have never touched her hair, but it wasn’t with out temptation. The many days of her hair just hanging in her face. The wrestling of rubber bands and hair clips. The really bad hair days. There were many times I was threatened to just to cut bangs and be done with it, but someone was always there to talk the scissors out of my hands.
The day finally came. 2 years, 1 month, and 2 days old, it was time for little Miss Ellie to get her first hair cut. I talked to her the night before to let her know what we were doing the next day. She was more than a little apprehensive, as a matter of fact she down right refused to even entertain the idea. “No, Mommy, NO!! I not get hair cut MOMMY!!” By the next day she had warmed up to the idea just a bit. It might have had something to do with the surprise I promised her.
We arrive at Bambino’s Salon for Children right as it opened, so we only had to wait a few moments. Luckily there were other kids already there so Ellie saw that other kids were getting their hair cut and none of them were cry. Whew!
The staff at Bambino’s was very sweet and understanding. Trimming off her baby ends, Ellie never flinched and did exactly what the Stylist asked of her. As I watch her get her trimmed I realized that we had hit the milestone I had pushed off for 2 years. It hit me that my baby was a toddler, another milestone that I celebrated with mixed feelings. I mourn for the baby she was and I celebrate the big girl she’s becoming. I miss cuddling with the little baby girl swaddled in a blanket, but I look forward to the many first to come.
In the end the only tears from that day were the ones I shed. I can’t believe how quickly this is fly by.
She still talks about that day and the “little pop” (lollipop) she got. She’s asked me when it’ll be time for the next haircut. The good thing is now she actually sits still for me when I comb her hair!!! Woo Hoo!!!
Next, big girl panties.
