I’m a pretty liberal Mom. I let my 4 year old daughter listen to pop music. She could spell Glamorous before she was 2 thanks to Fergie. If You Seek Amy by Britney was once a favorite, but lost the top spot to Kadi Perry’s California Girls, and she sings a pretty mean version Ke$ha with the “Brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack” being one of her favorites lines.
Now of course she doesn’t know what any of these songs mean and believe me I’m aware that I’ll have a lot of explaining to do in a few years. I already her Judy Blume books all ready and waiting for her. I’m actually looking forward to these talks.
Over on Rock On Mommies, I wrote a post about the 7 and 8 year olds little girls who performed to Single Ladies, in support of them! I laughed when Janet flashed her boob at the Superbowl and I clapped when Madonna kissed Britney and Christina. It’s just not my style to get worked up about these kind of things. But, when a Network has to tone down a TV Show because they’re worried about Child Pornography laws, this should instantly tell you there’s something wrong.
This is a screens shot from the Skins.tv website. This is where you can log on and let everyone know what you were doing, where, and give details. Parties, Sex and Drugs you name it and this is all being marketed to teens. For the first time, I’ve got to say MTV has gone to far.
With quotes like
“I normally take her to the Hospital. They have Detox”
“Tony, if you can get that kid’s cherry popped, I will accidentally lose control of my breasts during next week’s halftime show.”
It would be one thing if this was a show about Teens targeted to adults, but sadly it’s not. It would be one thing if this was a movie with an R rating, but sadly it’s not. It can be seen on the MTV or on MTV’s website.
I don’t mind having a conversation about these subjects with my daughter. I just don’t want her to think this is “normal” or “ok”. Let’s be honest, how many of us actually believed everything our parents said to us when we were teens?
