What to Know About Deodorant and Anti-Perspirant

Tom's Deodorant Sharp

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Tom’s of Maine. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have never put any thought into what was in my deodorant and antiperspirants. I’ve used it since I was a teen and have continued to just buy the same brand since. I surely have heard all the grumblings about it being bad for you, but I have never done the research. And frankly, we are a culture of over-information. To the point of every public facility posting some warning about the fact that some product they serve or use on site is going to ultimately kill you. It has all become white noise.

Then Tom’s of Maine approached me and a little voice in the back of my mind thought….hmmm…maybe I should do a little research. I’m glad I did. I had no idea how either products worked or what was actually in them.

A quick Google search clarified the difference between deodorant and antiperspirants:

Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores with powerful astringents such as aluminum salts so that they can’t release sweat. Deodorants work by neutralizing the smell of the sweat and by antiseptic action against bacteria.

I’m no doctor, but the whole “clogging the pores” thing sounds a bit scary. I looked at the ingredients on my current brand and realized I had no idea how to pronounce any of them, let alone what they might be.  I then checked out the Tom’s of Maine ingredients. A breath of fresh air.

I have no idea if the ingredients are bad on my previous brand, but I don’t have the time to research each one. I want to use a product that I don’t have to work for. I mean seriously who has time for all that research?

I am all for things that make my life easier and healthier. My new morning regimen includes the use of Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant

Tom's of Maine Deodorant

My nightly regimen? One ingredient. Grapes.  The squished kind. You can get more information from Tom’s of Maine on their Facebook page!

Five seriously awesome bragging rights and other reasons I have decided to become a Tom’s of Maine user:

1. Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant has no aluminum, no petrochemicals, no parabens and no artificial fragrances or preservatives.

2. It’s clinically proven, 24-hour odor protection using odor-fighting hops and odor-trapping zinc.

3. Fully recyclable packaging through local municipalities or the TerraCycle Tom’s of Maine Natural Care Brigade.

4. No animal testing and no animal ingredients.undefined

5. 10% of Tom’s of Maine profits go back to helping people and the planet.

NOTE: If you perspire a lot, you may need to choose an antiperspirant, depending on your day’s activities. This product is a deodorant (anti-odor) not an antiperspirant (anti-sweat), thus it does not protect against wetness and does not include aluminum as an active ingredient.
