#SundaySmack: A "newspaper" for moms. Blog posts you missed from around the web this week.

Throughout the week Theresa and I read posts from other bloggers we think you need to read. Remember the old days when our parents would sit with a cup of coffee and read the newspaper on Sunday mornings? Sunday Smack is a newspaper for moms. Grab your coffee, hide in the bathroom if you must, and read some of the great blog posts you missed this week.

Imagination Soup

Tons of great books in here for your tween girls and boys.

As I read and review books, I’ll continue to add all recommendations to this list of the best books for 10-year olds. Use this age as a starting point. Each child is unique and will progress differently in their reading abilities. Best Books for 10 Year Olds

Grown and Flown

This is a fabulous compilation of quick thoughts from parents of all walks of life who are taking their kids to college.

It all happens in the next few days. After two and a half years of pondering the empty nest here at Grown and Flown, and eighteen years of dreading it, Mary Dell and I will bid our youngest children farewell next week as they are both leaving home for college. Mary Dell is threatening to bring home a new puppy and I am just now realizing that I should have had a fourth child. Leaving Home for College

BonBon Break

Dear White Moms…this is a letter to white moms regarding the Mike Brown story.

I’m writing this to you as a friend, as a dear friend. We’ve shared so much over the years, before kids – blissfully ignorant childhoods, angsty teenage years, the discovery and recklessness and uncertainty of college and early adulthood, and now this. Motherhood. We’ve been there for each other all the time – through birth plans gone awry, breastfeeding, being so sleep deprived we don’t know if we’re wearing shoes, picky eaters, husbands who appear to be working against us, discipline, the mean moms at the playground, everything. I don’t know how I’d be here without you, and I hope you feel the same about me. Dear White Moms

Rage Against the Minivan

A chronological account of the eye-witness stories of what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting of Mike Brown.

Today my friend Shaun King put together a chronological account of the eye-witness stories in the murder of Mike Brown. I know that there are some who are confused about the outrage and protests around this case, but I think if you watch this it will give you a better understanding. Note that MOST of these witnesses did not know Mike Brown, which is quite different from the narrative I’ve seen from some suggesting that all of the witnesses are personal friends who are weaving a story. Eye Witness Accounts of Mike Brown’s Murder

Your Home Based Mom

These adorable little heart shaped cookies make us want to break out our aprons.

This recipe is for a butter cookie made with cornstarch.  The addition of the cornstarch creates a light and delicate cookie that basically melts in your mouth when you bite into it. The dough is very soft. Cinnamon Butter Cookies

Cooking Classy

These look so good we might make them while the kids are at school and not share a single bite with them.

In the past, I’ve tried many strawberry cupcake recipes and they’ve all left me wondering, where is the strawberry flavor? I’d see a hint here and there but these, oh these! They are overflowing with strawberry flavor. The liquids of this batter are made up of a strawberry puree and milk blend, then chopped fresh strawberries are folded into the batter. Strawberry Cupcakes

Interior Collective

Now and then I’ll see a photo on some site or other that shows something interior design related that I think is so AWESOME and I CAN’T WAIT to try it myself. Recently I saw a terrific kitchen renovation online that had lighting consisting of simple sockets hanging from black cords; what made them AMAZING was the decorative bulbs used. Creative Ways to Use Decorative Bulbs

Good Life For Less

Loving these fall fashion ideas.

Between boots, jeans and sweaters it is impossible to decide which is my favorite item to purchase each fall – it’s a three way tie… and since we’ve already talked about fall trends for jeans this year (here and here) I am excited to dig into sweaters next. Fall Must Haves

Diary of an Addict

We love her casual style. She makes workout clothes look a little less yoga-y and a little more stylish.

This summer I also invested in some new workout “gear” as I shall now call it, which actually helps to motivate me to work out harder. It’s always more fun to watch your muscles flex and strain while you work out when you love what you’re working out in! No? Just me! Ok, guilty party of one and loving it. I Haven’t Fallen Off the Wagon
