1. Take a calendar and map out a schedule each week to give your children something to look forward to. If there is an upcoming vacation, put that on the calendar, as well.
2. Make sure that family time (everyone is together as a family, not just mom and kids, or dad and kids) is scheduled: a picnic, a barbeque, a day trip to the zoo, a day trip to the fair, or to a waterpark.
3. Make a list of 20 great things to do during the summer that are low-cost or no-cost, such as city festivals or events. Also, check with your Parks and Recreation Departments for offerings that kids and families can participate in. These are usually low to no-cost.
4. Set firm guidelines and offer choices, but let the kids make their own choices (within the guidelines). Let them take turns. This is a great way to start simple decision-making.
