This morning was just like every morning in the Rock On Mommies household. The Today Show on in the background, Ellie dragging her feet to get ready and me begging everyone to hurry up.
Ok, so there was one little thing that was different. Today the Supreme Court was hearing arguments about California Prop 8, ban on same sex marriage. A subject very close to my heart. I noticed that Ellie was watching the screen with a little more concentration than most mornings. So I asked what she was thinking.
Ellie – What are they talking about? Who can’t get married?
Me – In California it is illegal for one Man to marry another Man or for one Woman to marry another Woman.
Ellie – What? Even if they love each other?
Me – Yep.
Ellie – Well that’s not fair.
I then stopped rushing around, grabbed my laptop and showed Ellie this picture.
Me – Do you remember taking this picture?
Ellie – Yes! I remember being nervous because I wasn’t sure what we were doing. Then one of the guys gave me a lollypop and took pictures of you and I. They were really nice and I thought I was a model! (They were Adam Bouska fashion/celebrity photographer and Jeff Parshley)
Me – We did this to show there should be no hate in the world and anyone should be allowed to married anyone they love.
Ellie – You know what Mom, you should blog about that. This isn’t right. You should be able to marry who ever you love.
Well, ok then.
When I think back on that day I remember being excited and nervous. I was worried about what my readers might think, what my family would think and what my neighbors would think. Fast forward 4 years later I can’t believe I worried about what anyone thought. This was a learning experience for Ellie and a statement for me. If I’m going to teach Ellie she can be what ever she wants when she grows up, I also need to teach her she can also love whom ever she wants.
