Years ago we took both kids to the dentist with the intention of finding out how much we would be spending on their orthodontic treatments. Translation…how many additional jobs would I need to pick up to maintain my passionate collection of clothing, shoes and wine while paying for their ortho treatments. After an hour long consultation we ultimately decided that while Keenan’s teeth had a few cosmetic issues, we weren’t going to spend the money on him because Noah’s teeth were an absolute disaster and were going to cost a fortune.
So poor Keenan was left out. Year after year after year he pleaded with us to get him Invisalign. Not braces as he was 14 when we started this process and already in high school and insisted his life would be ruined if he had to look like his brother did…
…and year after year we continued to say no. Because a few small gaps in his teeth or pretty new shoes…he’s fine.
I’m clearly kidding. I would never not get my child something so I could buy new shoes. Unless they were really pretty shoes with red bottoms. Then I would be only mostly kidding.
One day in March, Christmas arrived early for Keenan. Invisalign reached out to me and asked if I would like to work with them. Aside from knowing how happy this was going to make my sweet teenager who had patiently waited for his moment to arrive, I was truly curious about Invisalign.
The only thing I knew was what I saw on the posters at our orthodontist’s office. The pretty smiling face that for months I thought were advertising what your teeth looked like AFTER you used Invisalign. It wasn’t until well into Noah’s treatments and hours upon hours of me staring at those posters while Noah’s braces were being tightened or his bands changed out, that I realized those posters were advertising what Invisalign looks like WHILE you are using it.
I was super curious. How does it work? DOES it work? Do they stay in your mouth like braces? Do you have to take them out? Would the kids just lose them? What happens if they do lose them? How expensive are they? Why isn’t everyone doing it if you look like that poster instead of a sporting a mouth full of metal?
I am finding out the answers to all of those questions as we begin this journey with Invisalign. Follow along and get answers with me. What happens when you lose a pair? (I will for sure have to find out the answer to that one!) How many times will Keenan lose his? Is Keenan actually able to make it all the way through this year long journey? Do they actually work? How do they work with mouth-guards and sports? Do they make boys actually brush their teeth? Wear deodorant? Be nicer to their moms?
What questions do you have about Invisalign? Ask away and I will give you honest answers as I find them out during our year long treatment!
