The other morning while dropping Ellie off at school her teacher pulled me aside to show a project she had been working on. Hanging on the wall was a little essay Ellie had written about what she would do if she were President.
It says “If I were President I would make sure my people would stay safe. I would make sure that every school in America would be safe.”
Part of me was so proud of her for thinking of others. The other part of me was worried that she didn’t feel safe at school. Oh and did you see those people laying on the floor? UGH! What was that all about?
When I picked her up from school I asked her about the picture.
Me – “Honey, can you tell me about your what I would do if I were President paper?”
Ellie – “Well, I want everyone in America to be safe. I think kids should be able to go to school and feel safe.”
Me – “Wow Ellie! That’s a lot for a little girl to worry about. What made you think of that?”
Ellie – “Well remember a couple months ago…”
Me – Crap! She’s going to talk about the shooting! “Honey what happened a couple months ago doesn’t happen all the time. I don’t really want you to worry about it.”
Ellie – “I know, but it really hurt.”
Me – “I know, we were all really sad about it.”
Ellie – “Well I’m much more careful now.”
Me – “What do you mean?”
Ellie – “Well, when I run to the sandbox I know remember where the crack is and I jump over it. I don’t want to skin my knee again.”
Me – “What?”
Ellie – “You know I cut my knee when I tripped. They gotta take care of those cracks! Kids trip and fall and hurt themselves!”
Me – “So those kids laying on the ground tripped?”
Ellie – “Yes, what did you think?”
Me – “I was thinking about how proud I was of you.”
So Ellie would make sure everyone was safe. Ellie for President 2058!
