Here in San Diego we have an amazing Toy Store called Geppettos, they have 8 locations. Geppettos always seem to have the most creative toys, toys I remember from my childhood and they far less overwhelming than the major Toy Store Chains. They also carry one of our family favorites, The Original Green Toys, which I talked about before (here).
Today on Twitter @Geppettos asked the question “Sharing is caring…What’s your favorite family holiday tradition? How old is it?”
I don’t think I can fit the answer into 140 characters so instead I thought it would make a great blog.
Every year we go to the Beach on Christmas Eve for pictures, then to Fidel’s Norte for Christmas Eve dinner and then for a drive to look at Holiday lights before heading home to crawl into bed.
Our Daughter is only just turning 3 so our other traditions are fairly new for our family. Every year before Thanksgiving we do a Toy purge. Basically we go through all her toys grab the ones that she’s out grown or no longer plays with, clean them and then box them up to take to the Salvation Army.
Not only is this a great way to make sure your house doesn’t become one giant toy box, but it’s also nice to pass down lightly used toys to another child. This is the first year that Lil L was aware that she was giving away her toys. She was upset at first. She just didn’t want to part with her toddler toys, but after I explained there were little boys and girls who didn’t have toys she took a deep breathe and said “Ok, Mommy.” I’m very proud of her and I think she was proud of herself.
Though I’ve done this ever year I can remember, this will be Lil L first year of giving to the Angel Tree. This is the first year that I think she’s old enough to begin to understand. This year she’ll pick out a couple toys she really wants and then we’re going to buy them for the Angel Tree. Now I’m sure she’ll be upset parting with her new purchases, but I have a feeling that Santa will reward her generosity.
Make sure you stop by Geppettos Toys before you go and shop at the big chains, you might just run into me. I’ll be the one trying to figure out which toys to get for Christmas, Hanukkah and Lil L’s birthday. All in one month! Panic Attack!
What is your family tradition?
And if you any of you have suggestions for what to get a 3 year old little girl, I’m all ears! 😉
