Hi Friends and family,
Today the kids dressed up for Halloween and were absolutely adorable! Koreans don’t celebrate this holiday but due to the influx of foreigners here who do, and wanting the kids to understand holidays in the Western world, most students at Hogwans (private schools) dress up. The students learned “Happy Halloween” and “Trick or Treat” then came trick-or-treating to the classrooms. My mom had brought me a 4 pound bag of halloween candy when she visited so I gave each student a piece of that and taught them what they were (nerds, laffy taffy, sweetarts).
The kids liked the nerds the best and it was really interesting to watch how they negotiated with each other for trade. It wasn’t “give me some nerds for a sweetart.”…it was “here is ONE nerd and I want ONE sweetart.” Can you imagine American kids trading for only ONE nerd, no way, wouldn’t happen so this was pretty entertaining to watch!
At the end of the day the head teacher pulled me out of class to take pictures with the kids. They dressed me up in a cape, face mask and headband thingie with skulls on top and I had to sit in front of a wall covered in black and orange balloons and a “Happy Halloween” sign while every student in the school got their individual picture with me. I felt like a cross between Santa Claus and the drugged up Tiger at the Thailand zoo who sat for hours while tourists got pictures with it!!
So enjoy the pictures I attached! I especially love the last one, that’s Neal whom I call the “one eyed wizard!”
