Got Teens? Insure those smart phones with Asurion.

We leave for our second annual vacation to Deep Creek Lake, MD tomorrow and I have been packing all week. Anyone who knows me, knows that’s a complete lie. I will pack tonight for my whole family around 10:00 pm. But?  I have been thinking about packing all week, which kind of counts.

Thinking of packing has me reliving the ridiculous amount of fun we had last year. We joined another family and between us we have eight kids, two boats, two cottages, stupid amounts of laughter, enough food to feed a small country, a tiny tiny bit of wine *cough cough* and twelve smart phones. Lake plus smart phone equals bad.

Upon arrival I told both of my teen boys and my husband to put their phones in Ziploc bags if they were going to have them anywhere near the water. My middle son decided to just leave his in the cottage and not bring it near the water. I did the same. My husband and my oldest son, because clearly I am not smart and they are, decided to ignore my warning and throw caution to the wind.

The first day went well. We went tubing, we went kayaking, we went fishing, we boated into town for some grub. And? The day ended with twelve dry phones. Success.

The next day, because I don’t give up easily, I said to my husband and my son as they dangled their phones dangerously over the water while checking texts or taking photos, “Hey guys, it would be a REALLY good idea to put those phones in plastic bags.”

My oldest son rolled his eyes at me and said in his most, you are annoying and clueless voice, “Mom, I am not going to get my phone wet. I’ve got this.”

My husband just grunted and continued to snap away at the kids playing in the lake.

Very well then, good luck with that. I decided to take the kayak out for some exercise. I was gone for one silent, green, nature filled hour of peace. Upon my return my son met me on the dock. He had a sheepish look on his face.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“My phone got wet,” he said with the sadness of losing his best friend.

I noticed my husband was standing a few feet behind him looking out of sorts and shuffling his feet.

“How did it get wet and how bad is it?” I asked, resisting the urge to scream, “I TOLD YOU TO PUT IT IN A BAG,”  and doing the nanny boo boo dance.

“It was in my pocket and I jumped in the lake,” he said.

“The old jump in the lake trick,” I said and patted him on the shoulder.

I looked around him at my husband and raised an eyebrow.

“My phone is wet too,” he said. “I sat it down in a puddle on the boat.”

I was gone an hour…

I smiled my I’m right and you’re wrong as usual smile and said, “Well, good thing we have insurance on the phones. We will take care of it when we get back in town. In the meantime I suggest you put both your phones in a bag of rice for a couple of days and see what happens.”

The bag of rice worked on my husband’s phone.
