This week we feature our first Blogger of the Week. Mary McCarthy of Pajamas and Coffee. She’s been a fave of mine for years. Back in 2009 she was one of the very first people I found on Twitter and while I had only 15 followers and she had around 6,000, she followed me back and I started reading her blog. I stumbled upon this post titled, “Fitting In Is Totally Overrated,” and decided to ask her to put her money where her mouth was and emailed her to asked for some mentoring. Then I waited. Two days later she returned my email with humorous guidance and continued to do so for years to come.
We became fast friends and have spent many conferences together, have vacationed together (recently at her writing cottage and I am forever changed by the beauty of it) and have been there for each other when the bottom fell out with one of our children, to boost each other when we wondered why in the hell we chose this profession or to celebrate a HUGE win such as her novel that will be out next year. She is one of the funniest, smartest, craziest women I have ever met and I am proud to call her a friend and am honored to know her. Especially because she is one of the cursingest biatches I know.
What she’s about:
Mary McCarthy (@marymac) has 20 years of professional writing experience, including the Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Baltimore Sun, many regional magazines (two as Editor) and newspaper humor columns. She started the humor blog pajamasandcoffee.com in 2008. She is currently an editor at Splice Today where she also writes weekly. She is a contributing Katie’s Crew blogger at katiecouric.com and has appeared on The Today Show, Huffington Post Live and ABC TV News’ Moms Get Real with JuJu Chang. This fall, she starts as a teacher in blogging and social media at The Writer’s Center in Washington, DC. She is the author of The Scarlet Letter Society, her first novel, which will be published in 2014.
The Six Questions:
Q1: If you could trade lives with another blogger for one week, who would it be?
A1: I guess I’d trade with whoever the richest blogger is and then quickly spend all of his or her money and run up his or her credit cards before the week was up. Seriously, though. I have a writing cottage on an island paid for by my Internet writing. Life is good. Not sure I’d switch with anyone.
Q2: Two bloggers everyone should know about, besides yourself of course.
A2: I have always been a huge fan of blogs that do one simple thing and do it well. Awkward family photos. Cake Wrecks. Unnecessary quotation marks. These are blogs I love because they make me laugh. Who doesn’t love to laugh?
Q3: What do you think about Kim Kardashian wanting to match her stroller fabric color to that of her baby North West?
A3: Having babies eats your soul. I know, because I had four. I am not sure there is a stroller fabric color that matches devoured soul.
Q4: Who is your celebrity crush right now?
A4: Besides obviously you, Stefanie, Jon Stewart is my perpetual celebrity crush.
Q5: Make up a word for us and tell us what it means?
A5: Absofuckingsmurfly is one of my favorite made-up words because it has both the F word and “Smurf” in it. Use it anytime. You’re welcome.
Q6: One piece of advice you think every woman should take?
A6: Always ask what’s on the dessert list before you order dinner. You don’t ever want to miss out on a fantastic dessert because you’re too full from dinner, so it’s good to plan ahead and have your priorities in order.
Also, orgasms. Duh.
