This week I participating in the SITs Back to Blogging event. Todays assignment is to Re-upload a post you wish more people had read and explain why it was important to you.
I think todays is the easiest one for me and doesn’t really need any other explanation other than the actual post itself.
Marriage Equality and the NOH8 Campaign – September 26th, 2009
A few months ago I had the opportunity to participate in a photo shoot for the NOH8 Campaign. For those of you who don’t live in California or don’t know about the NOH8 Campaign please visit their site here… http://www.noh8campaign.com/
For me this was an opportunity to actually stand up for something I believe in strongly in. I just don’t understand how we live in this day and time and still we don’t have equality for all. It tears me up inside to know that two people who are of consenting age are not allowed the same privilege I have. Why can two people who love each other get married?
I don’t understand the political arguments against Gay Marriage. Is it just something else for the Right and Left to argue about?
I don’t understand the religious objections to Gay Marriage. If you are “Christian” aren’t you taught to love and accept everyone?
I don’t understand the family objections to Gay Marriage. Are not 2 loving parents better than none?
I cannot come up with one reason why this should even be an issue. So when I had this opportunity I couldn’t see any reason not make the drive up to LA. It was a great day and a great experience.
When my husband saw the pictures, he thought they were beautiful. Seriously Adam Bouska is one of the most amazing photographers and can make anyone look amazing. The next thing he said to me was “You’re not going to post that on your blog or twitter are you?” His concern was that I was going to offend readers and possibly his clients.
My heart dropped. Was he right? Was I going to offend people? Was I going to destroy my blog before it even started? So I held off, but I did use it as my profile picture on my Facebook. I lost a few “friends” and I got a number of less than positive comments, but I kept it up. I truly believe in this cause!
For the last few months I’ve been secretly disappointed in myself. I said I was going to post this picture on my avatar. I said I was going to promote this cause and to some point I have, but have I done it to the best of my ability? No… So here I am today, standing up for what I believe in. Maybe for the first time in my life. My Avatar, profile picture and anywhere else I can post a picture it will be my NOH8 picture!
