Alma our The Elf of the Shelf

Lil L is just turning 3, so as a new family we haven’t had much time to create our own HolidayFamily traditions.   We celebrate Chanukkah and Christmas and are still feeling our way through merging both holidays.

One thing I know is as a child I loved the thought of there being a Santa and I really want to pass that on. We’re going to write him a letter ok, maybe we’ll email him a letter. We’re going to go visit Santa at the local mall, but when I saw Elf on the Shelf this year I couldn’t have been more excited!  What a perfect time to introduce this into our family!

The Elf on the Shelf is one of Santa’s special scout elves.  These Special Elves are sent out to watch other kids and at night they report back to Santa on whether the kids have been naughty or nice.

I purchased a new Elf today from Geppettos Toys here in San Diego while Lil L was in School.  Before her nap I read her the book that came with the Elf.  This way she was ready to look for the Elf as soon as she got up from her nap.   Here’s the out come…

Ok wait, disclaimers… It’s hard to hear Lil L, it’s very shaky and my house is still super messy from the Thanksgiving Weekend!  Ok now you can watch…

She wasn’t sure what to think about it and will sometimes whisper things to me so that the Alma (the Elf) won’t hear. Obviously I missed that chapter in my parenting books that explains scary little creatures could be frighting to a toddler!  Yes, she named the Elf Alma. Everyone gets to register their Elf’s name and then register their elf on the Website.

Our dear Alma did come in hand when Lil L wasn’t in the mood to eat dinner tonight.  All I had to say was “Elf On the Shelf” and she quickly ran to back to her table and ate more of her dinner.  Woo Hoo!  The threat of Santa not delivering presents really does work!  😉

So tonight when she was in the bath I ran downstairs and hid Alma.  After the bath we both went downstairs to grab a book and she noticed Alma was gone.  She was so excited that Alma flew back to the North Pole to tell Santa that she was a good girl.  We  talked about what Alma might be doing at this very moment and where he might be sitting in the morning.  I love that this got her imagination flowing

Maybe she’s warming up to the idea and maybe my Grinch of a Husband will warm up to it too!

I’m really excited we found a new fun Tradition for our family.  I’m looking forward to growing Alma’s personal story over the years with Lil L.
